The Control of birds is essential to public health, diseases such as Histoplasmosis which is a respiratory disease that may be fatal results from a fungus growing in dried bird droppings & Salmonellas often attributed as "food poisoning" are commonly traced to pigeons, starlings and sparrows. The disease bacteria found in the dust from droppings can be sucked through ventilators and air conditioners, contaminating food and cooking surfaces in restaurants, homes and food processing plants among many more.

Nuisance birds are frequently associated with over fifty kinds of ectoparasites, which can work their way throughout structures to infest and bite humans. About two-thirds of these pests may be detrimental to the general health and well-being of humans and domestic animals. The rest are considered nuisance or incidental pests.

Not only are birds potential health threats but they cause significant financial damage to properties both structural and through additional maintenance. Blocked drains, excrement on walls degrading the paint work as well as damage to air-conditioning units means the cost of removing and renovating areas is greatly increased. In order to minimize health implications of birds and protect your assets NPC provide numerous control measures for varying species, some of which are outlined below.

Physical Prevention - Netting
Physical prevention is the preferred method of control for all bird species and is achieved through netting and/or spiking. Netting is a specialized physical bird deterrent system, which incorporates a UV stabilized knotted polythene net. The net gauge ranges from 19mm to 50mm, depending on the bird species to be controlled. The net is hog ringed to a frame work of stainless steel guide wires that are held in place by stainless steel fixing bolts. Where large areas are to be protected, stainless steel barrel strainers will be used in order to adjust wire tension if required in the future. This is a widely used net proofing system, with a long history of effectiveness in many situations worldwide.

Physical Prevention - Spiking
This spiking incorporates stainless steel wires on a UV light stabilized plastic base. This system will be fixed with a strong silicon adhesive, to areas where birds perch such as the top of the window arches and leading roof edges.

Misting
Where physical prevention is not possible because of the building design or is simply not economically practical a misting system can be used in stead. The system is based on repelling birds with a non harmful chemical deterrent. The chemical is non harmful to humans and birds but it does irritate the birds (not humans) resulting in the birds moving off the property. The chemical has a slight odour of grapes and won't cause harm to assets located within the area.

The chemical is applied through a specialized electrical fogging unit that is placed in strategic accessible areas of the site taking into consideration the wind and areas of bird activity. The foggers are set on predetermined timers coinciding with the bird's peek activity times. Once the birds come into contact with the fogger and its chemical the number of birds infesting an area are significantly reduced.

Trapping
Trapping programs are often used in conjunction with other control measures and are only aimed at feral pigeon populations. These trapping programs are aimed at reducing large feral pigeon populations in Dubai only, the program works by setting traps and pre-baiting which entices birds into the traps. Once the birds have become familiar with feeding inside the traps the doors are closed and the removal begins. Whilst these programs can be effective against casual invaders, resident birds often already have a natural food source which they gravitate to within the area, in these cases, where permitted by law, NPC will shoot to remove resident / nesting feral pigeons thus helping minimize the attraction of the area to future populations.
